Peers and Survivors Take Back Our Voices

Trauma Informed Care recognizes the absolute vital contributions of mentally ill peers and their contribution to mental health care—yet, most often, peers are kept at the bottom of the hierarchies, and their voices are actively silenced in the hierarchy. It is time we change this in an effort to strengthen and empower peer and survivor voices within mental health care.

Between Trust and Trauma exists to change this picture. We believe that the industry should revolve around how to best help us; what else are we all here for? And, we believe no one is as qualified as we are to express our needs and expectations of our providers.

Between Trust and Trauma is hosting four individual discussion forums to sit down as mentally ill peers and survivors to discuss what Trauma Informed Care looks like to us, what we need from our providers; what works and what doesn’t.

These forums are open exclusively to individuals who navigate mental health challenges, hold an SMI designation, or identify as a peer or survivor. If you are a traditional provider, an outside observer, or looking to impact the discussion from outside the lived-experience perspective, please step aside—this room is strictly reserved for us.

Each discussion group will be 60 minutes long and will feature a loose discussion format between up to 6 participants about trauma informed care is and what that looks like to us.

Confidentiality—registration requires a valid email address to receive your secure meeting link, but you are entirely welcome and encouraged to use an alias during the discussion. All identities and contact info will be kept strictly protected on my encrypted account.

Full Disclosure: these conversations will be summarized without any identifying information to be used, initially, to bring Trauma Informed Care to Flagstaff, AZ; and on a larger scale to encourage discussions between industry professionals and peers to create the most trauma informed structures we possibly can.
